  • Referral Information

Children may experience a range of medical conditions that could benefit from the expertise of a pediatric specialist in a particular field. We emphasize the coordination of all healthcare providers involved in a child's treatment. Our role involves working with specialists to ensure the best care for your child, including providing guidance on when specialty care is recommended.  In order to facilitate a productive relationship between the patient, primary care provider, and specialist, sometimes it is necessary for us to conduct an initial assessment at our office before making a referral.

    Newborn Care FAQs

Who sees my baby in the hospital after being born?

The area hospitals have dedicated pediatric hospitalists that admit, manage, and discharge all newborns in their nursery.  While you and your baby are in the hospital, please contact our office to schedule your baby's first visit with us.

WHEN DOES MY NEWBORN HAVE THEIR FIRST CHECKUP?

Your new baby has the first checkup usually 1-3 days after leaving the hospital.  During this checkup, we will evaluate for any significant weight loss since birth, feeding issues, physical exam abnormalities, and answering any and all parent questions.

WHAT SCREENINGS DOES A NEWBORN BABY GET?

Before leaving the hospital, every newborn in New York State has a hearing screen, pulse-oximeter (oxygen) check for critical congenital heart disease, and 5 drops of blood from the foot for the Newborn Screen.  The Newborn Screen can test for over 50 rare but critical genetic medical disorders that warrant further evaluations that should not be delayed.  An abnormal pulse-oximeter screen would be managed before the baby can be discharged from the hospital.  An abnormal hearing screen will result in a referral to our regional follow-up center, Midhudson Regional Hospital, for a repeat hearing test around 1 month of age.

    What are well-child visits?

Well-child visits are ongoing checkups for children that follow a specific schedule.  Besides being seen at our office within a few days of going home from the nursery, your newborn may require another visit to check for further weight loss or worsening jaundice prior to the standard one month well visit.

During each well-child visit, we will evaluate growth and development, and perform a complete physical examination.  All well-child checkups are an opportunity to talk with us about baby care and your baby’s health and safety.

We will also start the vaccine series at the two-month visit according to the CDC immunization schedule.
